
What Oils Should Never Be Used on a Clock?
One of the questions we're asked most often is:
Can I use the oil I already have?
The short answer is no.

Mechanical clocks are precision machines. The oil used on a clock must stay stable for years, resist gumming and oxidation, and provide proper lubrication in extremely small amounts. Many common household lubricants simply weren't designed for that job.
Using the wrong oil may allow the clock to run for a while, but it can also attract dirt, increase wear, and eventually lead to expensive repairs.
Here are some products that should never be used on a mechanical clock.
WD-40
WD-40 is an excellent water displacer and penetrating fluid, but it is not a clock lubricant.
While it may temporarily free a sticky movement, it quickly evaporates and leaves behind residue that attracts dust and dirt.
Many clocks that arrive for repair have been damaged by repeated applications of WD-40.
Motor Oil
Automotive engine oil is designed for high temperatures, heavy loads, and constant circulation through a filtration system.
A clock movement operates under completely different conditions.
Motor oil is too heavy for the tiny pivots found in a mechanical clock and can create unnecessary drag over time.
3-in-One Oil
Although many people grew up using 3-in-One Oil around the house, it is not intended for long-term clock lubrication.
Over time it can oxidize, thicken, and form varnish-like deposits that increase friction inside the movement.
Sewing Machine Oil
This surprises many people because sewing machines and clocks both contain small moving parts.
However, sewing machine oil was formulated for a completely different application and is not intended to provide the long-term stability required in a clock movement.
Gun Oil
Most firearm lubricants contain additives designed to protect metal from moisture, powder residue, and corrosion.
While these features are excellent for firearms, they provide little benefit inside a mechanical clock and may not offer the long-term lubrication a clock requires.
Household Oils
Cooking oils, vegetable oils, olive oil, mineral oil, and other household products should never be used on a clock.
These products were never designed as precision lubricants and can become sticky or break down over time.
Grease
With very few exceptions, grease should never be applied to the pivots of a clock movement.
Grease creates far too much resistance for the tiny bearings used in clocks.
The one common exception is certain mainsprings, where a specialized mainspring lubricant or grease may be recommended.
So What Should You Use?
Mechanical clocks should be lubricated with a high-quality clock oil specifically formulated for clock movements.
These oils are designed to remain stable for years while providing the proper lubrication needed by precision clock parts.
Using the correct oil helps reduce wear, improve reliability, and extend the life of your clock.
Final Thoughts
The wrong lubricant can do more harm than no lubricant at all.
If you're investing time in maintaining a grandfather clock, wall clock, mantel clock, or cuckoo clock, choosing the proper clock oil is one of the simplest ways to protect the movement for years to come.
