Knife Maintenance Begins Here

deviders_edited_edited.png

A quality folding knife is more than a cutting tool—it is a precision mechanism. Proper cleaning and lubrication help keep the pivot operating smoothly, reduce unnecessary wear, and protect the knife’s performance over time. Whether carried every day or kept as part of a collection, a well-maintained knife is simply a better knife.

Precision Care for the Mechanism Inside

Folding knives depend on small, closely fitted components working together: pivots, washers, bearings, detents and locking surfaces. Dirt, moisture and old lubricant can interfere with that movement and gradually increase wear.

Horace Whitlock approaches knife maintenance the same way we have always approached fine mechanical equipment—with careful application, proper lubrication and respect for the mechanism.

A Few Drops Are Usually Enough

Work the blade open and closed several times to distribute the oil, then wipe away anything that reaches the outside of the knife.

Excess lubricant can attract pocket lint, dust and grit—the very material routine maintenance is meant to remove.

Knife lubrication is not a matter of soaking the mechanism. In most cases, one small drop applied near each side of the pivot is enough.

Why We Created Horace Whitlock Knife Pivot Oil

A folding knife may look simple on the outside, but inside it is a carefully fitted mechanical system. The pivot, washers, bearings, detent and locking surfaces all depend on smooth, controlled movement to work properly.

At Horace Whitlock, we have spent decades caring for precision mechanisms where proper lubrication isn't an afterthought—it's essential to long-term performance. That same philosophy guided the development of our Knife Pivot Oil.

Rather than creating another general-purpose household lubricant, we chose a food-grade synthetic oil designed specifically for the routine maintenance of folding knives. It flows easily into the pivot, helps reduce friction between moving parts, and leaves a thin lubricating film without requiring excessive application.

Our goal was simple: create a lubricant that is easy to apply, dependable to use, and worthy of the precision mechanisms it protects.

Designed For:

  • Folding knife pivots

  • Bronze washer systems

  • Ball-bearing pivots

  • Slip-joint mechanisms

  • Multi-tools and other small precision mechanisms

Why Food-Grade?

Many people use the same pocket knife throughout the day—for opening packages, preparing lunch, cutting fruit while camping, or other everyday tasks.

Using a food-grade lubricant provides added peace of mind for those situations while still delivering the smooth performance expected from a quality knife lubricant.

Often We Are Asked:

Can You Use WD-40 on a Folding Knife?

WD-40 can be useful for displacing moisture, loosening residue and helping remove light surface rust. However, those jobs are different from providing lasting lubrication inside a folding-knife pivot.

After cleaning or moisture removal, the pivot should be wiped clean and lubricated with a small amount of oil intended to remain between moving surfaces.

From the Workbench

A quality folding knife isn't complicated—but it is a precision mechanism.

A few minutes of proper maintenance can help keep the pivot smooth, reduce wear, and make a knife more enjoyable to use for years.

The Horace Whitlock Knife Maintenance Library is being built one guide at a time.

Every article will be written for knife owners—not engineers—and based on practical maintenance that anyone can perform with confidence.

"A good knife deserves more than occasional attention. It deserves proper care".
