How to Use Your Sharpener

Your tool includes 6 essential sharpening and honing features, all packed into one compact body. Here's how to put it to work:

□ 1. Coarse Carbide Blades

Use for: Damaged or very dull knives

How: Place blade in notch, pull straight back 3–5 times with light pressure. Always pull in one direction — never saw.

□ 2. Fine Ceramic Rods

Use for: Honing and everyday touch-ups

How: Use the ceramic notch just like the carbide one. Light pressure. Few passes. Sharp edge.

□ 3. Diamond Tapered Rod

Use for: Serrated edges and specialty tools

How: Match the rod to the groove, work one serration at a time. Use tip for gut hooks and small curves.

□ 4. Leather Strop

Use for: Final polish, razor sharp finish

How: Draw blade backward across the leather side, alternating strokes. Think slow and steady, not fast.

"Sharpen your tools before the job starts, not after you’re already bleeding."

Knife Care & Sharpening Instructions

Picture
Sharpening a knife properly is an art—it takes practice, patience, and attention to detail. This sharpener includes a 20-degree angle guide on the diamond sharpening sides and a 25-degree angle on the ceramic honing side. These guides are ideal for achieving the correct edge angle on most knives.
To begin, rest your knife blade against the angle guide and slowly slide the blade forward. Typically, 4 to 10 passes per side are sufficient. Take your time and work carefully. With consistent practice, you’ll build skill and confidence until it becomes second nature.
After using the diamond side(s), move on to the ceramic honing rod. You’ll notice the slightly steeper angle—this final step helps refine and polish the edge, making your blade razor-sharp for daily use.
Once you're satisfied with the sharpness, use Horace Whitlock’s microfiber cloth and Food-Grade Lubricating & Cleaning Oil to wipe down the blade and handle. This protects the steel and removes any remaining residue.
Next, inspect your knife carefully. Check the blade for chips or imperfections, then examine the handle. Make sure there are no loose screws, pivots, or latches.
Important Note for Everyday Carriers:
If you carry your knife in your pocket, be sure to check the pivot area—where the blade attaches to the handle. Pocket lint and debris can get lodged deep inside, which may prevent the blade from fully locking open. This is a serious safety hazard. A blade that seems locked may suddenly fold during use, causing serious injury. Clean this area thoroughly and inspect it regularly.

The photo we’ve included may exaggerate the issue, but we want you to fully understand the risk.
Remember—sharpening is an art. Take it seriously. Practice often. And always inspect your knife before putting it to use.

"A dull knife is a slow death to a man’s pride. Keep it sharp, keep it honest."— Horace Whitlock
